What are drive bits?

Drive bits, or driver bits, apply torque to screws, acting as the interface between the tool - be it a screwdriver, drill or any other type of driver - and the screw itself.

Drive bits come in many shapes and sizes to meet the requirements of the different tools and screws they're used with. They're often sold in driver bit sets that consist of various lengths, diameters and head types. This allows for them to be used interchangeably and offer a versatile solution for any torque-related application.

What are the different types of driver bit?

As the extent of our range might suggest, there are countless different types of drill and driver bits for you to choose from. Generally speaking, any woodworking or material project will likely benefit from having access to a number of drive bit sizes and head types, and choosing the right bit will depend entirely on the nature of your project and/or line of work.

Here are some of the most common drive bit types:

Drive bit types for screwdrivers

• Slotted (flat): the simplest drive bit format for flathead screws and one of the best options for torque application via screwdriver.
• Phillips: Phillips screws cam-out (slip) once the screw is installed to prevent over-torquing and damage to the screw/material, and are the most common screw and drive bit
• Pozidriv: very similar in their appearance to Phillips, the main difference is that Pozidriv will not cam-out once the screw is firmly embedded in the material.
• Hexagonal head: hex drive bits us a quarter-inch hexagonal fitting and offer a configuration with limited slip risk that can withstand greater torque than other fitting types.
• Square: otherwise known as the Robertson screw, square recess bits offer low slippage and can be held in place on the tip of the driver bit. They're particularly popular in the Canadian market, having been invented there. We stock an extensive range of Wera square drive bits.

Drive bit types for socket drivers

• Hex: Interfaces with six-sided bolt heads and the most commonly used socket drive bit
• Square: the original socket bit fitting, with a four-sided head.
• Pentagon: more uncommon, five-sided head, used for specialist jobs.
