What are DVI cables and HDMI cables?

HDMI cables are used for transferring audio and visual data through multiple home devices such as televisions, DVD players and video gaming systems. Computer devices such as PCs, laptops and projectors can also require these types of cables and they are often used in commercial settings such as educational facilities and offices. They allow audio and/or visual signals to be transferred to the display device into which the component is plugged.

DVI cables were an earlier development, prior to the introduction of HDMI, and they allow the transfer of only video signals. An even older component is the Video Graphics Array (VGA), a lower-resolution connector for video devices. Although this is no longer a standard feature in most devices, it's possible to use a VGA to HDMI converter (or HDMI to VGA converter) to transmit signals to HDMI outputs and display on a computer or television.

What are the features of HDMI cable connectors?

As with most electrical connections, a HDMI cable will either feature a male HDMI connector or a female HDMI connector. Female connectors are typically built into the devices, for use with a male-end cable. Male HDMI connectors are therefore most often supplied as one single part at the end of a HDMI cable. This provides easy replacement of the cable or connector.

HDMI connectors are available with different angles including straight, swivel and right-angle. A straight connector is the most common and will be the most widely used across most

applications. Right-angle connectors point downward and are useful when the space in front of a socket is minimal. Swivel connectors allow an angle switch from straight to 90 degrees.

What are the types of HDMI adapters, cables and converters?

The main size types of HDMI cables are the standard, the mini HDMI cable and the micro HDMI cable. Mini HDMI ports are often used on small devices such as cameras and even some tablets. Micro HDMI ports are used less frequently but they still offer the same performance, just on a more niche scale.

• VGA to HDMI cables - These enable a connection between two devices where one only supports VGA. Because they only support video and not audio, you'll also need a separate cable to receive sound.
• High-speed HDMI cables - These cables support advanced technology, providing a way to view 4k Ultra HD and 3D content with the simple use of an adapter. If you have a HDMI 2.1 device, you'll need an ultra-high-speed HDMI cable to view higher resolutions.
• USB cables - If your device has a USB port but doesn't support HDMI, a USB to HDMI cable means that you can connect any system. These can be useful for a variety of systems including televisions, projectors and even cell phones.
