Pneumatic Regulators
Also known as pressure-reducing valves, pneumatic regulators have a vital role to play in ensuring the safe and efficient working of compressed air systems. They contend with any fluctuations in input pressure and output flow to maintain a consistent supply of pressure to any external applications.
We have thousands of air compressor pressure regulators and valves and we’ve made it even easier to find the components you need thanks to the filters on the left-hand side of this page. You can narrow down your search by port size, thread type, operating pressure, and a number of other specifications, so you are sure of finding the products that are perfect for your project.
RS is proud to partner with only the very best manufacturers, which is why we include hundreds of Norgren air regulators and Festo regulators as part of our extensive collection. Read on to find out more about pneumatic air regulators, how they work, where they’re commonly used, and why you can rely on us to deliver the components you need.
What is a pneumatic regulator?
Typically, the compressed air that arrives in a pneumatic system from the air compressor is more highly pressurized than the system itself. That means it needs to decompress before it enters the system. Otherwise, it has the potential to damage the application it is powering, which in turn may limit the lifespan of that equipment. This is the job of the pneumatic regulator.
It ensures the PSI is appropriate for that application and reduces the amount of wasted air. If the pressure in the apparatus were to rise above the pre-set levels, the pneumatic regulator would release some air as a safety measure.
What are the different types of pneumatic pressure regulators?
Pneumatic regulators can vary in many ways, from their port size and thread type to their operating pressure and proof pressure, while there are also inline air pressure regulators that are installed directly into the system. Broadly speaking, however, they can be divided into three categories: general-purpose, precision, and special purpose.
- As the name suggests, general-purpose pneumatic regulators feature specifications that will support a wide range of compressed air applications. They are typically low maintenance and offer excellent reliability, which makes them more cost-effective.
- Meanwhile, special purpose pneumatic air regulators boast more niche specifications, such as for use with unique materials.
- As for precision pneumatic regulators, they are most suited to applications where the control of pressure must be exact – in order to give accurate results in testing, for example.
Where might you find pneumatic pressure regulators?
Air compressor pressure regulators will be found wherever an appliance requires the use of an air compressor – for example, the various power tools that are regularly used inside a car repair shop. Pneumatic regulators are widely utilized in the transport industry to operate the brakes on trucks, buses, and trains, while they can also be found in dentistry equipment, mining apparatus, and the field of robotics, to name just a few.
