What are DC gearmotors?

A Direct Current (DC) gearmotor is a rotating electrical device that converts direct currents of electrical energy into mechanical energy. Inside the DC gearmotor an inductor produces a magnetic field that creates a rotary motion as DC voltage is applied to its terminal.

• Brushless DC gear motors – The key difference between brushless DC gearmotors is that they don’t have a commutator. Commutators use ‘brushes’ which wear down over time, so a brushless DC gearmotor therefore is more durable, and also safer than the brushed design.

Because the supply voltage can’t be adjusted, series DC gearmotors can’t regulate their speed very well. But it makes them useful for tasks that require high starting torque, such as power tools and sewing machines.
