What is a wire duct?
Wire ducts, otherwise known as cable ducts, raceways or trays, are a widely used form of housing for a run of wires or cables. Wire ducts are long, rigid, hollow trays that function as a protective raceway for cables in areas where it isn't possible or practical to conceal the cable system under flooring, behind a wall, or in the ceiling. As such, they're found in high traffic areas of work and home spaces such as doorways and hallways, providing protection and efficient organisation for the wiring as well as creating a safer, tidier work or home environment.
Although some cable ducts are formed as a one-piece channel unit, a typical wire duct consists of two parts. The first is the brace or cleat that holds the wiring and attaches (either screwed in or fixed with a high-strength adhesive) to the surface the duct is to run along. The second is the raceway wire cover, which is applied over the top of the cable (typically via a snap-tension mechanism) hiding it from sight.
What are the benefits of using wire and cable duct covers?
Wire ducts are a fundamental component of cable management and are found in professional spaces that operate electrical systems. The simple, cost-effective nature of cable duct covers allows for easy installation and the ability to bypass potentially expensive concealment jobs in favour of an equally effective fix. Using ducts can often mean that cables don't need to be run inside walls, under flooring, or through the ceiling.
The benefits of utilizing cable covers and raceways include:
- Cost and time effective: inexpensive to purchase and install, wire ducts offer a cheap but effective form of wire housing that means you don't have to conceal wires where it isn't practical or difficult - and expensive - for example, under laminate flooring or behind ceiling tiles.
- Safe: cable ducts provide safe housing for wiring systems, keeping them hidden in high traffic areas and thus providing an optimal solution for both damage prevention to the wires and safety for passers-by.
- Efficient: the versatility in the configuration of wire ducts (see the different types of wire cover below) allows for simple rerouting of wires where required and overall organization of the wiring system. The vast range of materials on offer makes them suitable for efficient operation in all sorts of environments and installations.
- Durable: a simple structure built from robust materials, wire ducts are built to last for additional cost and user benefit.
What are the different types of raceway wire cover?
Wire ducts are not to be confused with similar wire housing components such as wireways (which offer increased protection from atmospheric contaminants but at a higher cost), cable carriers (a flexible, protective tunnel housing used in dynamic/moving cable management settings) and conduits (tubular systems used to protect electrical power wiring).
They do, however, come in a variety of configurations, materials, and sizes. Wire duct accessories typically fit into the following categories:
- Configuration: cable ducts are typically available in two configurations: slotless (a solid housing tray that does not feature any fingers or slots) and slotted (the duct features slots or fingers to allow for the breakout and rerouting of wires).
- Run type: use the filters at the top of the page to search by 'accessory type' and you'll see a variety of layouts for our stocked wire ducts, including 45- and 90-degree bends, T-junction, and corner layouts to allow the wire ducts to run seamlessly around high traffic spaces.
- Materials: different material types are available for distinct functions and installations, with common options including stainless and galvanized steel, nitrile rubber, and a variety of specialist plastics.
What are the applications for cord duct covers?
The simplicity of wire, cable, and cord ducts gives them a vast range of uses, covering everything from office fitouts to cheap and easy home wiring organization. Wire ducts are found in high traffic professional spaces such as doorways and hallways where the wiring needs to be protected as well as hidden and protected from high footfall.
As such, they're commonplace across a spectrum of industrial, commercial, and domestic environments, and are the popular choice for cable organization where the system cannot be concealed.
How to choose the right wire duct for the job
With thousands of cable covers and raceways available in our range, we'd recommend having a good idea of what you're looking for before beginning your order. While you can use the filters at the top of the page to narrow your search, asking yourself these questions will be helpful:
- What configuration do you require? For example, do you need slotted, multi-directional wire ducts to allow for rerouting of wires or do you simply need straight, slotless housing for a straight-line run of wires?
- What material choice is suitable and durable enough for your installation?
- What dimensions of wire duct do you require to effectively house your cable system?
