Strain Gauges

Strain gauge sensors are trusted tools for engineers, helping them to make logical decisions when it comes to all manner of designs, builds, and installations. This type of sensor measures the strain and force of a particular item, converting the physical loads and stresses into readable electrical signals.

Our wire strain gauges can assist with micro measurements, resistance, and mechanical use cases and we're proud to stock products from industry-leading brands. With advanced filter tools to help you find exactly the thing for which you're looking, it's never been easier to shop our range of strain sensors.

How do strain gauges work?

The strain meter is directly attached to an object or surface to measure the stress forces. The sensor is designed to allow for the bending of materials, as the stress forces can change the shape of the underlying material, causing the strain gauge to change also.

Following this, the strain gauge alters the resistance of the wire or foil circuit embedded inside of it, which can be read by the user passing voltage through it.

Each strain gauge is designed with a metal foil, which is insulated by a flexible substrate. Two leads pass a current through the gauge and, while the surface of the object being measured contracts, the change in the resistance here is measured.

What are the different types of strain gauges?

There are various types of strain gauges to suit several different applications, ranging from linear strain gauges and strain gauge torque sensors to electrical resistance models.

Choosing the right strain gauge for your application is crucial to delivering the best performance and obtaining the most accurate and reliable results. Ensure that you are clear on the specific type of strain force that you are measuring, whether that be mass, torque pressure, compressive, or material fatigue.

You should also understand what type of durability test you'll be performing, which could include residual stress analysis, material longevity analysis, temperature effects and so on.

Models vary by physical size, sensitivity, range and strain gauge accuracy. The most common strain meters include:

  • Wire strain gauge
  • Foil strain gauge
  • Linear and double linear strain gauges
  • Copper lead gauge
  • Quarter bridge strain gauge
  • Full bridge strain gauge
  • Bolt strain gauge
  • Embedded strain gauge

Common types of strain gauge applications

You can use a strain gauge to measure force or for weight management, as well as several other suitable applications:

  • Aerospace: The sensor is bonded to load-bearing elements within aircrafts to measure any strain or stress that may occur during flight. They can also monitor wing deflection and various on-board units to ensure safety.
  • Rail: The sensor can be bonded to railway lines to measure the stress experienced by the lines, the readings from which can alert the relevant teams if the railways are under too much strain. This crucial safety measure allows for the proper maintenance to be carried out when required.
  • Load cells: Load cells are crucial components in the majority of industrial weighing systems on processes. Strain meters are used within load cells to measure the stress of the load cell, determining weight and quantities.
  • Residual stress monitoring: An important element in manufacturing, strain gauges can monitor stress in casting, welding and formation processes. They also have applications in high-speed drilling.

What are the benefits of strain gauges?

Aside from providing accurate measurement readings, there are numerous advantages to using a strain gauge:

  • Can be used on a variety of products, including automotive products, medical devices and keypads
  • Easy installation process
  • Resistant to water and temperature changes
  • Long-lasting device that's easy to maintain
