How do light sensors work?

A light sensor turns light energy (photons) into electronic signal (electrons). It does this when the electrons in the light sensor absorb the photons from the light. This increases the kinetic energy of the electrons, which causes them to be emitted from the sensor, producing an electrical current. This is known as the photoelectric effect.

However, light sensors also produce energy through the photovoltaic effect. This follows the same pattern as above, but instead of the electrons being emitted, this time they're excited which allows them to move freely into the material. This is what creates the electric flow.

Agriculture - A light sensor can detect how much light certain areas of land receive. This can help farmers plan where different crops will be placed using the data collected.

What are the different types of light sensors?

Photodiodes

This type of light sensor converts light into an electrical current. The current in these sensors can only flow one way which means all energy is absorbed by the devices. Fire or smoke detectors often use a photodiode.

Photoresistors

Sometimes referred to as a photocell, this light sensor is passive and changes its resistance in proportion to the amount of light received. Photocell sensors can be used for battery or solar-powered outdoor lighting. As the day gets darker, the sensor automatically switches a light on until sufficient natural light returns.

Phototransistors

This type of light sensor detects light and converts it into electrical signals. It's often used to measure the intensity of the light and can control things like the light on a highway by sensing sunrise and sunset. As the light intensity drops, the light sensor will switch on the connected lights on the circuit.

Photovoltaic

The most common photovoltaic light sensor is a solar cell. This converts light energy into electrical energy in a process known as energy harvesting. This electricity is stored ready to be used by devices or to power buildings.
