DC Motors

Direct current motors, or DC motors, are found in all types of applications. They essentially convert electrical energy into mechanical energy by taking electrical power through a direct current, converting it into mechanical rotation.

What are DC motors?

A DC motor is essentially any rotary electrical machine that converts direct current electrical energy into mechanical energy. They can vary in size and power from small motors that you may find in toys and appliances to much larger mechanisms that power vehicles, elevators and hoists.

All motors, including the 12v DC motor and 24v DC motor, contain two key elements – the stator and armature. The stator is the stationary part of the motor and the armature rotates.

Very simple DC motors use a stationary set of magnets in the stator, and a coil of wire with a current running through it to generate an electromagnetic field aligned with the centre of the coil. These insulated wires are connected to a motor controller that applies an electrical current.

What types of DC motors are there?

Some DC electric motors have specific advantages and disadvantages over each other. Take a look at the types on offer to see which is best suited to your application.

Brushless DC motor – also known as an electronically commutated motor, they differ to the brushed motor thanks to the development of solid state electronics. The key difference is that they don’t have a commutator, which is replaced by an electronic servomechanism that’s able to detect and adjust the angle of the rotor. Another advantage is that they are more durable and safer thanks to their lack of brushes.

DC brushed motor – also known as the original DC motor, the classic brushed motor features a commutator which allows it to reverse the current every half cycle and create a single direction of torque. The DC brushed motor remains popular for electrical propulsion, cranes, paper machines and steel rolling mills.
