What are light pipes?

Light pipes are clear tubes that are used to help increase the uniformity of a light source in an enclosed setting. They work best when they are carrying light short distances. You'll find that within our selection of LED light pipes, there are models that are capable of bending light around corners and tight spaces without losing light intensity.

Giving users greater flexibility of light distribution, light pipes allow you to change the position of your LED light without changing the location of the LED itself. You'll find the majority of our pipe light fixtures are panel mounted or press fit, making them easier to install.

How do light pipes work?

To get real clarity from your light bulb pipe it's best if the light pipes are placed as close to the LED light source as possible on one end of a PCB board. The closer to the light source, the more light will be transmitted from the LED source.

There are two types of LED light pipes - rigid and flexible light pipes. Both are capable of redirecting light with minimal loss of concentration depending on the location of the LED and where and how the light pipe will be installed.

Flexible light pipes, like the Bivar flexible light pipe, are typically used in applications where light needs to travel through existing components, while rigid light pipes can redirect LED light in a fixed way, e.g. when an LED is mounted on an intermediary board behind a front panel.
