What is a wallplate? What are they used for?

Wallplates, also known as switch plates, are flat pieces of metal or plastic affixed to power outlets, light switches, and other wall-located electrical infrastructure.

They typically comprise a wallplate cover that is inserted or screwed into an electrical outlet. There may be inserts attached that can be wired up to the internal wiring. If there are not, a blank hole in the shape of the electrical insert wired to the wall is typically missing from the wallplate, ready for the outlet to be enclosed.

Wallplates are used to prevent damage occurring to the wiring within the wall, such as the wiring being pulled out, disconnected from the outlet, or dust and moisture from entering the cavity. They also protect people and animals from receiving electric shocks from the wiring.

To increase their durability, many wallplates designed for outdoor use also come with covers that can be securely opened and closed, preventing the elements from short-circuiting the wiring.

What types of wallplates are available?

There are countless types of wallplates available, matching many different connector types, uses, aesthetics, and more. Broadly though, they fall into the following categories:

• Blank wallplates: Blank wallplates are products that come with a machined or molded hole in their center that the connector insert is fed through- the outlet is wired to the wall. With blank wallplates, it's crucial to know the exact dimensions of the insert so it fits securely in the wallplate.
• Connectorized wallplates: Connectorized wallplates feature a built-in connector insert, which is wired up prior to the wallplate being set in the electrical cavity. Connectorized wallplates simplify purchase and installation, as users only need to get hold of a single item.
• Blank inserts: Blank inserts are like blank wallplates but are specially designed to be inserted into the cavity or wallplate. They are often used when one of the blanks in a wallplate is not required or must be temporarily covered.
• Connectorized inserts: Connectorized inserts are wired to the electrical system before being surrounded by a blank wallplate. They are the components that plug heads are affixed into.
• Wallplate accessories: There are several types of accessories that can be utilized alongside wallplates. These include single or double wallplate covers (also known as wall outlet cover plates) which protect plugs and wallplates from damage or the elements.
