Carling 172 used on boiler

Tech Level: Above-average knowledge - Ownership: More than 1 year |
| Pros: Used on propane/gas furnace... when door is latched in tightest position, it engages the propane burner. Tab on door is high heat and switch has performed well for many years. I bought the house in 1997 and I believe it was there then (11 years). |
| Cons: Switch is momentary ON, but failed ON. I disengaged latch while boiler was not calling for heat (off by thermostat). When water temp dropped and thermostat called for heat, burner started with door unlatched. |
| Other thoughts: I purchased another one to replace (as no other similar switch available and boiler will probably not last as long as the new switch). In safety critical applications, I would advise to verify switch is actually off if part of a multi-switch configuration (i.e. also thermostat controlled) before assuming system is off. In my case, burner was off because thermostat had it off. I unlatched the door (normal method for disabling burner when weather turns warmer), but switch stayed ON, and I had no way of knowing. Later, thermostat called for heat, and because boiler switch was still on, it started the burner. In hindsight, I will only disengage door when blower is on so I know that it physically (and electrically) disengaged. |
