What is a transformer?

A transformer's function is to step up or step down the electric voltage from a primary source to a secondary source. This is achieved by changing the ratio of coils on one side to the other, via a core, to either increase or decrease the total voltage.

There are various types of transformers that step up or step down the voltage from a power plant to buildings like houses, so that mains sockets are safe to use in the household. Failure to do this could result in fires or electrocution.
